Design within Reach at Facebook

I don’t want to talk about Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram – as it brings up extreme jealousy since I can only imagine what the 13 person team was doing once the announcement was made.

Fast Company wrote an article on “How Facebook find the best design talent  and keeps them happy”. They even have a team called “design recruiting” who scour the globe looking for people with fresh ideas and amazing work.

Before I read this article, my mind had a pre-conceived notion and skepticism about Facebook + design. When I think of design, I think of Apple or even Twitter  before I would think of Facebook. My bias might stem from the fact that 99% of the time I am accessing FB on my laptop so I don’t have a good idea what the interactions are like through mobile or tablet. But then I thought about how they rudely every few months change how FB is layed out in the timeline or profile pages. I wonder “do they even do any user testing!” before making these changes.

The three qualities they are looking for:

  • A personal vision about what the world needs or where design is going
  • A sense of ownership over the projects they work on;
    “builder mindset”
  • I can think through a need -> I can think through a customer base -> build something -> ship it => iterate based on how it’s being used

As I kept reading though, it was clear to me that they hire designers not for their UI accomplishments but for their innovation in creating seamless interactions. Looking at the acquisition of Mike Matas or the Gowalla team, their unique perspective is what FB acquired. Their designers have in a sense become their visionaries as they work directly with product managers on envisioning a better Facebook.

Microsoft Outlook Masthead Usability

While browsing the Microsoft Outlook site, I noticed they have an area carved out for a mastead with a large image of the platform on a Mac. This masthead was different though than most I have browsed across – it wasn’t rotating.

When a user selects the “+”, a lightbox of screenshots open

Users can rotate through a series of screenshots. To exit, users select the black

By hiding the screenshots, a much cleaner UI and site navigation is presented. Microsoft has decided to go with a very simplistic, condensed site where all the product features are presented upfront.

The issue with hiding those screenshots in a lightbox is if a user has javascript disabled, they won’t be able to see these images. It’s also not entirely clear if the “+” is clickable. I had to scroll over the area to see if that was just another icon on their page.

Overall, I really like this page because of its simplicity. It has just enough information for visitors to learn about the product, but also could function as a landing page for them to drive traffic to.

What is design?

Content precedes design. Design in the absence of content is not design, it’s decoration.

Good Design Is…

Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
Good design is aesthetic.
Good design makes a product understandable.
Good design is unobtrusive.
Good design is honest.
Good design is long-lasting.
Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
Good design is environmentally friendly.
Good design is as little design as possible.

Life + Times Blog Navigation

I stumbled upon one of the most visually informative blog navigations on the Life + Times blog (Jay-Z’s team of blog writers). With human attention spans shortening thanks to image-concentrated sites like Tumblr and Pinterest, this site chooses effective imagery to make me want to scroll over every single image. The collection of images are related to an individual blog post. The user can scroll over each image to reveal the articles name, date and categorization. I have never seen a navigation reside on top of the site’s global navigation like this. Great job as always Jay-z

London Calling 2011

I went to London for the first time since the early 2000′s to visit a friend studying at LSE. The flight there wasn’t as bad as I thought (9.5 hours) on the day after Christmas (Boxing Day) but there happened to be a tube strike. The bus ride ended up taking 2.5 hours!

London_2011-3.jpg

This is one of the first photos I took in W2 on my way to shopping on Oxford Street. The round-a-bout is right around the corner of where I was staying. This entire neighborhood in West London has this style of building. The off-white buildings with black trim reminds me of walking by Newbury Street in Boston (where I dreamed to live).

Looking at this photo reminds me of the cold, brisk air whenever I stepped outside and my initiation into European lifestyle: Walking everywhere and beautiful plain (in a good way) architecture.

Song of the moment: Help Yourself – Amy Winehouse

I love fishes cause they’re so delicious

“Goldfish Salvation” by Riusuke Fukahori shows his use of acrylic to create 3-D to create realistic models of goldfish. His attention to detail with using a spoon/ladle further really brings a lifelike effect. Amazing – love the song as well

This exhibit was displayed at the ICN Gallery in London

The Story of Hipmunk

One of my favorite logos for a tech company. I’m a sucker for cute things

After discarding names like “BouncePounce” (if there werea  good travel deal, you’d pounce, right?) and Truvel (travel, but true), Hipmunk co-founder Adam Goldstein was discussing the naming roadblock with his girlfriend.

She suggested they go with a cute animal so they could have a cool logo. Hipmunk.com was auctioning for $70 t a time, and so the name — and admittedly adorable logo — were born.
